The 52nd Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday, July 20th, 2013 at the Port Carling Community Center. Doors opened at 9:30 for coffee and cookies and the meeting started at 10 sharp. The meeting commenced with written greetings from Tony Clement and Norm Miller and oral greetings from Councillor Lori-Lynn Giashi-Pacini on behalf of District Chair John Klinck and Township of Muskoka Lakes Mayor, Alice Murphy. Norman Yan briefly spoke of valuing the environment and the Muskoka Watershed Council’s commitment to the environment. Board member Mike Silver brought an update on dark sky lighting and what he feels is an ineffective dark sky by-law passed by the Gravenhurst Council.
The business portion of the AGM went quickly with the 2012 AGM minutes and financials being accepted, BDO Dunwoody was re-appointed as the MRA’s accountants, one bursary being presented and the new Board of Directors was elected. The MRA was pleased to announce that two new directors were joining the board and that our new President is Liz Denyar.
Mike Provan from One Muskoka gave an information presentation how their goal is an “independent review of Muskoka’s municipal system of governance”. One Muskoka is advocating that there are opportunities for Municipalities to work together by joining forces on by-law rationalization, environmental issues, economic development, general administration, human resources, tourism marketing, land use planning, purchasing, roads and finance.
Tim Smith from Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare explained that the provincial government is facing severe financial restraints and can no longer afford every hospital to provide all services. Hospitals are required to run a balanced budget and are trying to shift some services into the community and/or single site services in one area hospital.
Outgoing President Susan Daglish thanked the Board of Directors for their enthusiasm. Susan gave an update on which committees board members sat on, what was being researched and the nursing station/hospice/retirement development. As Past President Susan plans to review the by-laws and communication packages.
Incoming President Liz Denyar thanked Susan for her leadership and guidance over the past three years, as well as for dedicating her time and energy to the MRA.
